Breakfast Magic: Upma

If you want to prepare a simple, healthy, tasty breakfast in 15 mins, go for Upma. It is a South Indian breakfast but popular across the country. It is probably the Indian version of the North African dish: Couscous

The below recipe will serve for 2.

Ingredients:

  • Rawa/ Sooji/ Semolina - 1 cup
  • Carrot - 1
  • Onion - 1
  • Pepper seeds (not pepper powder)
  • Chopped Green chilies - 2
  • Ginger - peeled and mashed
  • Currey leaves
  • Ghee - 4 spn
  • Salt - to taste

Preparation:
  • Take a big frying pan/ vessel and heat it in medium flame.

  • Add the rawa/sooji/semolina into the vessel and roast for 3 mins till it turns very light brown.
  • Be careful not to burn it.
  • Keep aside the roasted rawa.
  • Pour ghee to the frying vessel and now add green chilies, pepper, curry leaves and mashed ginger.
  • Saute for 2 mins in medium flame.
  • Now add the chopped onions and carrot and saute for 3 mins.
  • Onions will turn golden brown by now.
  • Add exactly 2 cups of water and increase to high flame. Rawa:Water ratio should be 1:2.
  • Water will boil in 2 mins.
  • Add salt and stir well.
  • Add the roasted rawa/ sooji to the water and stir thoroughly to avoid bubbling.
  • In 2 mins the rawa will become soft.
  • Now bring stove to low flame and close the vessel with a lid and keep for 5 mins.
  • Keep checking to make sure that it is not getting burnt.

Breakfast is ready! You can have upma with sugar. I prefer to have it with sugar and a banana. Try this one and you are surely gonna like it. This is the best breakfast if you are in a hurry or if your tummy wants only light stuff.
